Good Egg of the Month
Tahu Mackenzie

We’re looking a little closer to home for our Good Egg this month, our birdlife hero hailing from Dunedin.

Tahu Mackenzie has worked at the Orokonui Ecosanctuary for over a decade now, guiding visitors from all over the world through 307 well-protected hectares of precious coastal Otago forest. In this time she’s seen first-hand the return of native birds and the important role they play in rejuvenating the forest.

She wasn’t content just to witness this important process however. Along with her equally clever partner, Harvey Penfold, Tahu has designed a new feeder specifically to protect native bird from predators.

The Peka Peka feeder is a wonderful invention. It’s made locally in Dunedin, easy to use and, by ensuring it can be locked to the top of a warratah, provides birds with a 360 degree view of their surroundings to ensure no sneaky, lowdown varmint creeps up on them.

We love her work – so much so that Topflite is now working with Tahu and Harvey on a very cool collaborative project. Watch this space!
