We’ve given the faithful Poultry Pellet a tune-up, providing chooks with a little something extra in their everyday feed.

It’s an ‘all-in-one-peck’ deal, complete nutrition for laying hens 16 weeks and older in a highly digestible pellet – and it’s produced right here in New Zealand.

The updated formula includes a live probiotic yeast to support a healthy gut and a serving of our own NZ-grown sunflower seed to help the girls’ feathers look their glossy best.

All the nutritional bases are covered too. There’s quality vegetable protein, carbohydrates and essential fats, with added vitamins, minerals and trace elements to support consistent egg production.

Every beakful is balanced so even your fussiest hen gets all the right nutrition.

What's new in our formula

A live probiotic yeast, built to survive the pellet

Most probiotics don’t make it out of the pellet-presser alive. That’s due to the heat applied to bind the ingredients. Ours are micro-encapsulated, meaning they’re alive in the bag and still alive where it matters: in your hen's gut.

The strain we've chosen is Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. boulardii, a live yeast that has been used in animal nutrition for over 20 years and studied in human health for over 50. It works by creating the right conditions in the gut for beneficial bacteria to thrive, supporting the gut lining and your hen's own natural defences.

You'll notice the benefit most when your birds are under stress: new birds joining the flock, a change of coop, a cold snap, or the annual moult. A settled gut helps hens become more resilient when feathers are ruffled.

Sunflower seed for condition
We've added our New Zealand grown sunflower seed. The seed’s natural oils (omega-6 fatty acids) and vitamin E, are essential nutrients for promoting good feather condition and a healthy sheen, especially through a hen’s natural moult.

FAQs

How many chickens should I get?

How many is too many? This somewhat depends on their roaming space, whether your coop can comfortably cater to them, and whether you can afford to look after them correctly. However before you start planning for a new (or bigger) flock it’s important to check the regulations with your local council. There are different rules for how many you are allowed (and other key details) depending on where you live.

What are the most important things to have in a chicken coop?

Your chooks will need dark nesting boxes, some solid perches for roosting and obviously somewhere to shelter from the elements. Chickens like to sleep close together so you don’t need to go over the top – something like 20cms of perch space will be enough. Nest boxes should be approximately 30 square cm.

How much should I feed each chicken?

For the average brown shaver (around 2kg) feed 120-130g of food each day. Extras, such as scraps or mealworms should be no more than 5-10g per day. For smaller heritage species, it's best to talk to a breeder.

Does any of your chicken feed contain extra hormones?

No it does not.

What kind of treats do chickens like?

They go crazy for mealworms! Scatter a few on the ground to encourage natural foraging behaviour. The high protein content also helps to boost egg productivity.

How often should I feed chickens treats?

Treats should make up, at most, 5-10% of their daily diet.

How long does chicken feed last when stored?

If stored correctly in a dry environment our feed should last approximately 4-5 months. Always check your feed for mould or bugs before feeding however.

Where do Topflite’s chicken feed ingredients come from?

Most of our ingredients are grown at our South Island farms, a lot of it harvested from the rich and fertile soils of our hometown, Ōamaru.

Does Topflite chicken feed contain ruminant protein?

The only product that contains ruminant protein is our Classic Layer Pellets. The protein content of our other feeds is vegetable based.
